Take a look at this video tutorial on how to make perfect bok choy for ramen.
Step 1 – Prepare Bok Choy and Other Ingredients
Good preparation is key to success, whether you are preparing Tonkotsu Ramen or something else. Take your bok choy and wash them under the water. Make sure you wash all the parts between the leaves. Chop only green parts from two bok choy into small pieces and cut two other bok choy vertically from the roots (white part) to the leaves. Chop one onion, mushrooms, and ginger as well.
Step 2 – Make a Homemade Broth
Now that your ingredients are ready, it is time to make a broth. The bok choy doesn’t have any particular taste, and if you don’t have time to follow my steps, you can always simply make ramen seasoning and boil bok choy in there. Put vegetable oil into a pot, then add sliced onions and mushrooms, and add sliced green parts of the bok choy. Stir everything until it is soft, then add sliced garlic and ginger. To make top ramen add one tablespoon of miso paste. Once everything is mixed together, add water or vegetable broth. And if you want to make ramen spicy, add chili flakes.
Step 3 – Place Sliced Bok Choy in a Broth and Simmer for 10 Minutes
Once the broth is bright to boil, you can now add two bok choy you sliced vertically. Place them in the broth and cover them with the lid. Leave the bok choy inside for 10 minutes until it is soft but still crunchy. While this is cooking, take another pot and place two eggs inside. To cook the eggs for ramen, you will need about 6 minutes and then remove them and peel them.
Step 4 – Cook Ramen Noodles
So your broth is done. Now it is time to cook ramen noodles. If you don’t have time, you can cook ramen in the microwave, but better noodles will come from the stove. Put water in a pot and bring it to a boil, then add two packages of Maruchan ramen. Cook ramen for six minutes and drain the water.
Step 5 – Build Your Bowl
Like with miso soup, it is all in building up a perfect bowl. Place your noodles in the bowl. Then add broth with mushrooms and sliced bok choy, cut one egg in half and place it on the top, take two bok choy from the pot and place them in the bowl, and finally slice one green onion and garnish everything. If you like, you can add cilantro and sriracha for a bit more spice.
You Can Add Whatever Meat You Want
If you like to build even better ramen bowls, you can always add the meat of your choice. The chicken breast is probably the easiest to add – just fry two chicken breasts, chop them into slices, and add them to a bowl. A bit more complicated way to add meat to this dish is to make meatballs from ground beef or pork. You will need the meat of your choice, green onion, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic. Bring everything together and make small meatballs. Fry these in the pan or in the air fryer and add them to your ramen once it is done.
Other Ways to Cook Bok Choy
If making a broth is too complicated for you, you can always cook bok choy in a simpler way. Just cut them in half and put them in boiled salted water for 10 minutes. Or you can steam them in the air fryer. Just cut the bok choy and wash them under the water, then place them in an air fryer on 350°F for 5-6 minutes. You can season this bok choy however you want and just place them in your ramen.
Another way you can try to cook bok choy is in boiled broth, whether vegetable or chicken, to add a bit more flavor to it.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, making a perfect bok choy is easy, and adding the taste to it will only depend on your imagination and the time you are ready to put aside to make this dish. Bok choy is an excellent addition to any meal – you can use it when making a stir fry or any other soup. All the bok choy needs is 10 minutes of heat treatment before eating, and you are good to go. Just keep in mind that this vegetable has a mild taste, so all the flavors it will get are from the ingredients you add. If you cook in homemade broth, you will get the best results.
